Google Ads Launches Channel Prioritization and Budget Allocation Controls
Google Ads now lets you set High or Low priority per channel and cap Search partners or Display spend. What changed on 14 Oct 2026 and what clinics should do.
On 14 October 2026, Google announced two optional controls: channel prioritisation and budget allocation. You can now mark channels such as Google Search, Search partners and the Display Network as High or Low priority. You can also cap Low priority channels at a percentage of your daily budget. The controls are rolling out globally over the coming months for Search, Shopping and Performance Max, with Demand Gen to follow. From February 2027, the current Display spend setup in Search campaigns goes away.

What Google announced
On 14 October 2026, Google published a post on The Keyword by Tal Akabas, Director of Product Management, Google Ads. It introduced two related settings:
- Channel prioritisation: you label channels "High priority" or "Low priority". Google funds High priority channels first, then spends the remaining budget on Low priority ones. On Target CPA or Target ROAS, Google says High priority channels are funded within your target.
- Budget allocation: for any Low priority channel, you can set a maximum share of your daily budget. Google describes this limit as "best-effort", so it is not a hard cap.
In Search campaigns, Google Search, Search partners and the Google Display Network can each get their own priority. In Performance Max and Demand Gen, Google-owned surfaces (Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Discover) are grouped as "Google channels" and prioritised together. The settings work at account level, at campaign level and on shared budgets.
How the budget cap works in practice
Search Engine Roundtable's coverage, which draws on the Google Ads help page, adds these details:
- The percentage is of the campaign's average daily budget, not of actual spend. 5% of AED 1,000 a day means about AED 50 on that channel.
- Setting a Low priority channel to 0% stops spend on it.
- The limit resets daily. Under- or over-spend does not carry over, and daily spend can occasionally exceed the limit.
- An account-level default applies to every eligible campaign of that type unless you override it on a campaign or shared budget.
- On Target CPA or Target ROAS campaigns that are not budget-limited, prioritisation alone generally won't change allocation. The percentage cap is the real lever there.
To set it up, go to Account settings and find the Channel Prioritization card. Choose a campaign type, set High or Low per channel, optionally add a percentage for Low channels, then save. Google says availability varies by account while the rollout continues.
The February 2027 change you should not miss
Google's post says that from February 2027, Search campaigns with the Display Network turned on will lose their current spend allocation setup, and spend may shift between channels. To keep roughly today's behaviour, Google suggests setting the Display Network to Low priority with a 50% budget allocation.
Who this affects
- Any Search campaign that has "Include Google Display Network" or "Include Google search partners" switched on.
- Performance Max advertisers who want to limit spend outside Google-owned surfaces.
- Advertisers on shared budgets, where the cap applies across all campaigns sharing that budget.
What clinics and healthcare advertisers in the UAE should do now
- Audit your network settings. Many clinic Search campaigns still carry the default Display and Search partners settings from when they were created. Check each one under campaign settings.
- Compare cost per booking by network. Segment your Search campaigns by network for the last 90 days. Look at conversions and cost per conversion, not clicks. This only works if your conversion tracking records real bookings.
- Use Low priority with a small cap to test, rather than switching a network off. If Search partners bring some bookings at a higher cost, a 10–15% cap lets you keep testing them without letting them take over the budget. These percentages are a starting point, not a Google recommendation.
- Decide on Display before February 2027. If your Search campaigns include Display today, either switch it off or set Low priority with an explicit cap. Don't let the February change pick for you.
- Watch Target CPA campaigns closely. Since August 2026, budget-limited target campaigns aim more tightly at your target. A new channel cap can change spend on top of that, so change one thing at a time.
- Health audience rules still apply. Shifting budget between channels doesn't change Google's health rules in personalised advertising.
What we don't know yet
Google has given no date for full availability, only a gradual rollout over the coming months. Check the card in your own account.

Frequently asked questions
Is the budget allocation percentage a hard limit?
No. Google calls it best-effort. Daily spend on a Low priority channel can occasionally exceed the percentage, and the limit resets each day.
Can I stop spending on Search partners completely with this setting?
Yes. According to the help documentation cited by Search Engine Roundtable, setting a Low priority channel to 0% stops spend on that channel.
What happens in February 2027?
Google says the current spend allocation setup for Search campaigns with the Display Network turned on will go away. To keep current behaviour, set Display to Low priority with a 50% allocation.
Which campaign types get these controls?
Google's post lists Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen. Search Engine Roundtable reports that Demand Gen follows after the first wave.
