Dental Insurance in Dubai: What Your Plan Covers and How to Add More
Dental insurance in Dubai: the AED 500 DHA basic dental benefit, what enhanced and international plans add, indicative costs, and how to add dental cover.
Every health policy issued in Dubai must include at least DHA's basic dental benefit: up to AED 500 a year for consultation, fillings, extractions, root canal, scaling and x-rays, with 30% co-insurance per visit. Crowns, dentures, implants and braces are excluded at that level. For more cover you need an enhanced plan or a dental add-on. An insurer quoted by Gulf News in October 2026 put typical dental limits at Dh1,500 to Dh3,500 a year with about 20% co-pay. The federal basic package used in the Northern Emirates does not cover dental at all.

Does Dubai health insurance cover dental?
Yes, but only a little at the minimum level. DHA's updated Essential Benefits Plan (EBP) table, set by circular GC 03/2024 and in force since 1 January 2025, is described as the minimum standard for any health insurance policy issued in Dubai. It includes a dental line:
| EBP dental item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Limit | Up to AED 500 |
| What you pay | 30% co-insurance per outpatient visit; no co-insurance on a follow-up within 7 days |
| Covered | Consultation, extraction, fillings, root canal treatment, scaling, x-rays, antibiotics and prophylaxis |
| Excluded | Dental prostheses (crowns, bridges, dentures, implants), orthodontic treatment, and all cosmetic services |
In practice, AED 500 does not go far once you add the 30% share you pay. Treat EBP dental as help with a check-up or a filling, not as full dental insurance.
You may read that basic plans cover "dental emergencies only". An insurer quoted by Gulf News in October 2026 described basic plans that way. DHA's current table lists routine items too, so check your own Table of Benefits to see how your insurer applies it.
Dental cover by plan type
| Plan | Dental |
|---|---|
| Dubai EBP (basic) | Up to AED 500, 30% co-insurance, routine items only |
| Dubai enhanced or corporate plan | At least the EBP level; most add a separate dental sub-limit. Amount varies by plan |
| Federal basic package (Sharjah, Ajman, UAQ, RAK, Fujairah) | Not covered, according to MOHRE. See our DubaiCare basic insurance guide |
| Thiqa (Abu Dhabi nationals) | Includes dental treatment. See our Thiqa guide |
| International plans (Cigna, Bupa Global, Allianz) | Usually an optional module or included on higher tiers |
What enhanced dental cover usually looks like
Dubai insurers do not publish one standard dental product. Most dental cover is a sub-limit inside a health plan. When you read a quote, look for these five things:
- Annual dental limit. The insurer quoted by Gulf News gave Dh1,500 to Dh3,500 as typical.
- Co-pay. About 20% is common, according to the same source.
- Waiting period. Some plans only start dental after several months. Sukoon's Bupa Global Premier plan, for example, starts dental after six months.
- What counts as dental treatment. Check whether root canals, crowns and extractions are in, and whether baby-tooth problems are excluded.
- Orthodontics. Braces are often excluded or only covered when medically necessary.
What it costs
No Dubai insurer publishes a fixed dental add-on price. The only recent public figure is from Gulf News (22 October 2026), which quoted an insurer saying a dental add-on can cost a few hundred dirhams per person, depending on the insurer and plan. Treat that as a rough guide. Your quote depends on age, the main plan and the limit you choose.
For context, the same article quoted Dh150 to Dh300 for a routine check-up and consultation, and Dh5,000 to Dh15,000 per implant with restoration. Our UAE dental costs news summary has the full list. If you mainly need cleanings and the odd filling, compare the add-on price with paying the dentist directly.
Dental on international plans
- Cigna Healthguard: dental is part of the optional Healthy Connect module, alongside wellness and vision. Orthodontic care is available on the International and International Plus levels (Cigna UAE).
- Sukoon | Bupa Global: Premier includes dental after six months with the insurer; Elite includes dental treatment (Sukoon Global Health).
- Allianz Care (Dubai): its Dubai benefit guide defines dental treatment (annual check-up, simple fillings, root canal, dental prescriptions), dental surgery and dental prostheses separately. Emergency outpatient dental after an accident is limited to three temporary fillings a year within 24 hours of the event. A separate Dental Plan covers routine work beyond that (Allianz Care Dubai benefit guide).

How to add dental cover
- Check what you already have. Open your Table of Benefits in the insurer's app and find the dental line. Note the limit, co-pay and network.
- Ask your employer. Group policies sometimes offer a higher plan with dental for an extra contribution, or cover dependants with dental on request.
- Ask about timing. Ask your insurer or broker whether dental can be added mid-policy or only at renewal, and when cover starts.
- Buy an enhanced plan if you are self-sponsored. Get quotes with and without dental from at least three DHA-permitted insurers (listed on isahd.ae) and compare the extra premium with the dental limit.
- Check the dental network. Some plans pay dentists directly only within a set network. Use the insurer's provider search. Our network lookup guide lists the official tools.
Using your dental cover
- Ask for pre-approval before root canals, crowns or surgery. The clinic sends it to your insurer or TPA.
- Get a written treatment plan with codes and prices. It shows what the insurer will pay and what you owe.
- Keep itemised invoices if you see a non-network dentist and claim back.
- Plan big work around your policy year. If treatment can safely wait, ask your dentist and insurer whether splitting it across two policy years lets you use two annual limits.
Cheaper options without insurance
Gulf News points to university dental clinics at Ajman University and the University of Sharjah, government health centres depending on eligibility, and clinics' preventive packages, family memberships and instalment plans.
