Google Ads AI Max for Search: How It Works and When Clinics Should Use It
Google Ads AI Max explained for clinics: search term matching, text customisation, final URL expansion, controls, the 14% claim, and DHA compliance risks.
AI Max for Search is a one-click setting in Google Ads Search campaigns that adds three things: search term matching (broad match plus keywordless matching beyond your keyword list), text customisation (Google writes headlines and descriptions from your site and ads), and final URL expansion (Google picks the landing page). Google says advertisers typically see 14% more conversions at a similar CPA. For clinics it can find new patient searches, but auto-written copy and auto-chosen pages must still meet DHA advertising rules, so turn it on with controls set and test it as an experiment.

What AI Max actually changes
Google announced AI Max for Search on 6 May 2025 as "a one-click feature suite" for existing Search campaigns, rolling out globally in beta from late May 2025 (Google Ads blog). Google describes it as the evolution of Dynamic Search Ads and of final URL expansion in Performance Max, but inside a Search campaign you control (Google Ads Help FAQ).
| Feature | What it does | Clinic example |
|---|---|---|
| Search term matching | Uses broad match and keywordless technology, learning from your keywords, assets and URLs, to reach queries you did not list | Your keyword is "dental implants dubai"; AI Max can match "replace missing tooth cost uae" |
| Text customisation | Generates headlines and descriptions from your landing page, ads and keywords (formerly "automatically created assets") | Google writes a headline from your implant page, which may include claims you never approved for an ad |
| Final URL expansion | Sends the user to the page on your site Google thinks fits best | A search about veneers lands on your veneers page instead of the general dental page |
The numbers Google quotes, and what they mean
- 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS for advertisers who activate AI Max, based on Google internal data (2025) for non-retail advertisers.
- 27% uplift for campaigns still mostly using exact and phrase match keywords.
These are Google's averages. A clinic's result depends on whether its conversion tracking counts real enquiries. If your account counts page views or button clicks as conversions, AI Max will chase cheap, low-value traffic. Fix tracking first: see Google Ads conversion tracking for clinics.
Requirements and limits that matter
- Needs automated bidding. Search term matching does not work with Manual CPC. Google recommends Maximize Conversions or Maximize Conversion Value. See Smart Bidding for clinics.
- Negative keywords are respected. Your negative keyword lists become more important, not less.
- Pinning can be ignored. If both text customisation and final URL expansion are on, or you add URL inclusions, pinned RSA headlines are not respected.
- AI Max vs Performance Max. When a query is eligible for both, the one with the higher Ad Rank serves.
- All or nothing switch. Turning AI Max off turns off all its features, including brand exclusions; turning it back on restores the previous settings.
The controls to set before you switch it on
- URL controls. Exclude pages that should never receive ad traffic: careers, blog posts about jobs, pricing pages you do not advertise, patient portals. Use URL inclusions or turn off final URL expansion if every ad must land on a reviewed landing page.
- Brand controls. Available at campaign and ad group level. Exclude other clinics' brand names if you do not want to appear on them, or limit matching to your own brand in a brand campaign.
- Locations of interest. Set at ad group level, a control unique to AI Max. Useful for clinics with branches in different emirates.
- Asset removals. Review generated headlines and remove any you would not sign off.
- Experiment, do not flip. Google offers an AI Max experiment that splits traffic 50/50 between your current campaign and an AI Max version. Run it for at least a few weeks before deciding.
The healthcare catch: DHA rules still apply to Google's words
Text customisation writes ads from your website. If your site says "the best", "100% results" or "painless", those claims can surface in an ad. The DHA bans words such as "the best", "100%", "miraculous" and "immediate results" in medical advertising (DHA standards), and Google's own healthcare and medicines policy limits prescription drug terms such as "Botox" in ads in the UAE. You are responsible for the ad, not Google. Practical steps:
- Clean banned claims off every page AI Max can use, or exclude those pages.
- Review the asset report weekly for the first month.
- Keep text customisation off for high-risk treatments (injectables, weight loss, surgery) and use AI Max for search term matching only.
More on the rules: advertising a clinic within DHA rules and what to do when healthcare ads are disapproved.
Should your clinic turn AI Max on?
| Situation | Our view |
|---|---|
| Tracking counts real leads (calls, WhatsApp, forms) and you have a steady volume of conversions | Test it as an experiment |
| Manual CPC, or conversions are page views | Not yet. Fix tracking and bidding first |
| Tight budget and one or two core treatments | Search term matching may spread spend thin. Start with exact and phrase, then test |
| Website full of claims you would not put in an ad | Keep text customisation off until the site is cleaned up |
Frequently asked questions
What is AI Max in Google Ads?
A setting for Search campaigns that adds search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion, plus controls for brands, locations and URLs.
Does AI Max replace keywords?
No. Keywords still work and keyword prioritisation is unchanged. AI Max uses your keywords, assets and URLs to find more queries.
Does AI Max work with Manual CPC?
Search term matching does not. Google recommends conversion-based bidding such as Maximize Conversions.
Is AI Max safe for healthcare ads?
It can be, with controls. Auto-written copy and auto-chosen pages must still follow Google's healthcare policy and DHA's banned-claims list, so review assets and exclude risky pages.
How much better does AI Max perform?
Google reports a typical 14% increase in conversions at a similar CPA, and 27% for campaigns mostly on exact and phrase match. Your result depends on your tracking and budget.
