Google Ads for Dentists, Doctors and Clinics
Google Ads for dentists and clinics: campaign structure, keywords, healthcare policy limits, no-remarketing rules, budgets, landing pages and tracking.
Google Ads for dentists, doctors and clinics works best as Search campaigns split by treatment (emergency, implants, aligners, check-ups, specialist consultations), with tight keywords, a 3 to 10 km radius, ads scheduled to opening hours and a dedicated landing page per treatment. Two policy limits shape everything: outside the US, Canada and New Zealand you cannot promote prescription drug names (so "Botox" ads get disapproved), and health ads cannot use remarketing lists or Customer Match. Track booked appointments, not clicks.

Why Search ads suit clinics
Someone typing "emergency dentist near me" or "dermatologist appointment Dubai" wants to book. Search ads put you in front of that person at that moment. LocalIQ's 2026 benchmarks show the economics:
| Industry | CTR | Avg CPC | Conversion rate | Cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dentists and dental services | 5.66% | $8.00 | 10.67% | $72.97 |
| Physicians and surgeons | 6.61% | $4.76 | 12.43% | $40.04 |
These are averages from mostly US accounts. Competitive cities and high-value treatments (implants, IVF, cosmetic surgery) cost more. Use them to sense-check your own numbers after 60 days.
Healthcare policy: what Google will and won't allow
Healthcare and medicines policy
Google's Healthcare and medicines policy sets the rules. The parts clinics hit most often:
- Prescription drug terms. Since the October 2025 update, promotional use is allowed only in the US, Canada and New Zealand (and keyword-targeting them there still needs certification). Everywhere else, including the UAE, UK and EU, ads, keywords and landing pages cannot promote prescription drugs. Aesthetic clinics feel this most: prescription-only injectable brand names are treated as restricted terms. Use treatment descriptions ("anti-wrinkle consultation") and keep brand names off ad-facing pages.
- Speculative and experimental treatments are prohibited. Some stem cell, regenerative and "anti-ageing" therapies fall here.
- Cell and gene therapies are prohibited except FDA-licensed products in the US.
- Telemedicine and online pharmacies need Google certification and are limited by country.
- Addiction treatment needs certification. Abortion, birth control, fertility and STI testing ads are not allowed in some countries.
- Dental, vision and travel health insurance are not restricted; general health insurance is restricted in the US.
Ads that comply in a restricted category show as "Eligible (limited)". Under the October 2025 rules, Google says it will warn at least 7 days before suspending an account for restricted drug term violations. Unauthorised pharmacy violations are treated as egregious and can lead to immediate suspension.
Personalised advertising: no remarketing for health
Health is a sensitive interest category under Google's personalised advertising policy. That covers health conditions, treatments, intimate health, invasive procedures including cosmetic surgery and injections, and disabilities. For these ads you cannot use:
- Customer Match (uploaded patient lists)
- Your data segments (remarketing lists of site visitors)
- Audience expansion and lookalike segments
You can still use keywords, location, Google's predefined in-market and affinity segments, life events and demographics. Custom segments with sensitive creative only serve on Display, contextually or to non-sensitive audiences. Plan your account around keywords, not audiences.
Local rules sit on top
Google requires you to follow local law in every location you target. In Dubai, the DHA medical advertising standard bans words like "the best", "100%", "the only" and "immediate results", requires accurate prices with conditions, and makes the medical director approve every ad. A Google-approved ad can still break DHA rules. More in the healthcare marketing playbook.
Campaign structure that works
| Campaign | Ad groups (examples) | Settings |
|---|---|---|
| Brand | Clinic name, clinic name + area, doctor names | Low budget, protects your name from competitors |
| Emergency / same-day | Emergency dentist, toothache, broken tooth, urgent care clinic | Opening hours only, call assets, tight radius |
| High-value treatments | Implants, clear aligners, veneers / IVF consultation / knee replacement consultation | Wider radius, separate budget per treatment |
| General care | Check-up and cleaning, family dentist, GP appointment, paediatrician | 3 to 5 km radius, mobile-first |
| Specialist consultations | Dermatologist, orthopaedic, gynaecologist, physiotherapy | One ad group per specialty |
Keep each ad group to one treatment so the keyword, ad and landing page all say the same thing. That match drives Quality Score and lowers your cost per click.
Settings checklist
- Networks: Search only. Untick Display and Search Partners at launch.
- Location: radius around each clinic. Set location options to "Presence: people in or regularly in your targeted locations" so you do not pay for people abroad researching your city (unless you want medical tourists, in which case build a separate campaign).
- Languages: in the UAE, include English and Arabic, and other languages your staff speak.
- Ad schedule: show call-focused ads only when reception is staffed.
- Assets: call, location (linked to your Business Profile), sitelinks to treatment pages, callouts (insurance accepted, parking, weekend hours), structured snippets (services).
- Bidding: start with Maximise Clicks with a CPC cap or Maximise Conversions on a small budget, then move to Target CPA once you have steady conversion data. See Google Ads Smart Bidding.
Keywords for dentists, doctors and clinics
Keywords that book patients
- Dentists: [emergency dentist], "dental implants [area]", "invisalign cost", "teeth whitening near me", "root canal dentist", "kids dentist".
- Doctors and clinics: "dermatologist near me", "gynaecologist [area]", "orthopaedic doctor appointment", "physiotherapy clinic", "pediatrician open now".
- Insurance-led: "dentist that accepts [insurer]", "clinic covered by [insurer]".
Use exact and phrase match first. Add broad match only once conversion tracking and Smart Bidding are working.
Negative keywords to add on day one
- Jobs and education: jobs, vacancy, salary, course, training, license exam, DHA exam, assistant
- DIY and information: home remedy, how to, symptoms, pictures, wikipedia, pdf
- Free and cheap (if you are not a low-cost clinic): free, government hospital
- Products: toothpaste, toothbrush, kit, buy, amazon
- Other cities you do not serve
Check the search terms report every week for the first month and add negatives. Watch for job searches such as "dental assistant jobs Dubai", which match treatment keywords but never book.
Ad copy that passes review and converts
An example for a Dubai dental clinic (compliant with DHA wording rules):
Dental Implants in Jumeirah | DHA-Licensed Implant Dentists | Free Parking. Consultation with 3D scan. Clear price plans, insurance accepted. Book by WhatsApp or call today.
- State facts: licensed team, location, hours, insurance, parking, languages.
- Avoid: "best", "painless", "guaranteed", "100%", "permanent", "no side effects".
- Prices: if you show one, show the conditions on the landing page.
- No prescription drug brand names outside the US, Canada and New Zealand.
- Write at least 3 headlines that include the treatment name.
Landing pages
Send each ad group to its own treatment page, not the home page. The page needs:
- Headline that matches the search ("Dental implants in Jumeirah").
- Phone, WhatsApp and booking button visible without scrolling on a phone.
- Doctor names, photos and licensed titles.
- What happens, how many visits, price range with conditions, insurance accepted.
- Consented case photos with a "results may vary" disclaimer and risks (DHA rule for Dubai).
- Location, map, parking, hours.
- Short form: name, phone, preferred time. No medical history fields.
- Fast load on mobile data.
Tracking: calls, forms, WhatsApp, bookings
Most clinic bookings happen by phone or WhatsApp, so track them all. Step-by-step setup is in Google Ads conversion tracking. The essentials:
- Calls from ads via call assets, counted only if longer than 60 seconds.
- Calls from the website via website call tracking where available, or click-to-call as a secondary conversion.
- Form submissions on the thank-you event.
- WhatsApp clicks as a conversion (secondary until you confirm they book).
- Offline booked appointments imported from your practice system using the click ID. This is what Smart Bidding should optimise towards.
Privacy rules: name conversions neutrally ("Booking"), never put conditions or patient names in URLs or conversion values, and do not place tags inside patient portals. In the US, HHS guidance on tracking technologies still applies to logged-in pages even after a 2024 court ruling narrowed it.
Budgets
Work from the patients you need, not a round number:
- Target: 20 new implant consultations a month.
- If 40% of enquiries book, you need 50 enquiries.
- At a 10% conversion rate, you need 500 clicks.
- At $8 a click, that is $4,000 a month for that one treatment.
If that is more than you can spend, narrow the radius, cut the schedule to peak hours or start with emergency and brand campaigns, which usually convert best. Give any change at least two weeks before judging it.
Common mistakes
- One campaign for everything, sending all traffic to the home page.
- Counting page views or button clicks as conversions, so Smart Bidding chases junk.
- Display and Search Partners left on by default.
- No negative keywords for jobs and training.
- Ads running at night when nobody answers the phone.
- Remarketing set up for a health service, then disapproved.
- Prescription drug names in keywords or landing pages outside permitted countries.

Frequently asked questions
Are Google Ads worth it for dentists?
Usually yes for high-intent treatments like emergencies, implants and aligners, because the searcher is ready to book. LocalIQ's 2026 data puts the average dental cost per lead at about $73. Whether it pays depends on your booking rate and patient value, so track booked patients.
Can clinics advertise Botox or other prescription treatments on Google?
Outside the US, Canada and New Zealand, promotional use of prescription drug terms is prohibited under Google's October 2025 policy update. Advertise the consultation or treatment category instead, and keep prescription brand names off ad landing pages.
Can I use remarketing for my clinic?
Not for ads about health conditions, treatments or procedures. Health is a sensitive category, so Customer Match, your data segments and lookalike audiences are blocked for those ads. Rely on keywords and location.
How much should a clinic spend on Google Ads?
Work backwards from the number of patients you need, your booking rate and your cost per click. A single high-value treatment in a competitive city often needs several thousand dollars a month to generate steady bookings.
Do I need Google certification to advertise a clinic?
Not for standard clinic services. Certification is needed for online pharmacies, telemedicine providers that prescribe, addiction services and some other categories, depending on the country.
