Google Ads Cost Per Click: How CPC and Google PPC Charges Work
How Google Ads cost per click is set by the auction and Ad Rank, how Google charges you, healthcare CPC benchmarks, and practical ways to lower your CPC.
On Google Search you pay only when someone clicks your ad. The actual cost per click (CPC) is set in an auction. You pay roughly the minimum needed to beat the ad ranked below you and clear Google's quality thresholds, so it is usually less than your maximum bid. In US benchmark data from 2026, average CPCs were $8.00 for dentists, $4.76 for physicians and surgeons, and $5.42 across all industries. Google publishes no official UAE averages, so use Keyword Planner to estimate costs in your emirate.

How Google Ads charges you
People searching "google ppc charges" usually want three answers: what they are charged for, how much, and when the money leaves the account.
- What you pay for: on Search campaigns, you pay for clicks, not for impressions. Some interactions also count as clicks, such as a tap on a call button in an asset. Google caps charges at two clicks per impression on each ad and its assets, according to its automated assets help page.
- How much: you control spend through an average daily budget. On a busy day Google can spend up to 2× that figure. Over a month, charges stay within 30.4× the daily budget, because 30.4 is the average number of days in a month. AED 100 a day therefore means about AED 3,040 a month at most.
- When you're charged: with automatic payments, your card is charged when costs reach your payment threshold, and on the first day of each month. You can be charged several times a month if you keep hitting the threshold.
- UAE note: Google says Google Ads may be used only for business purposes in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Tax treatment varies by country, so check the tax settings on your billing profile with your accountant.
How your cost per click is set: the auction and Ad Rank
Every search that triggers ads runs an auction, and Google ranks the ads by Ad Rank. According to Google's Ad Rank page, Ad Rank uses six inputs:
- Your bid: the most you're willing to pay for a click.
- Ad and landing page quality: expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience, measured at auction time.
- Ad Rank thresholds: minimum quality levels an ad must reach to show at all. The threshold for the top of the page is higher.
- Auction competitiveness: how close your Ad Rank is to the ads around you.
- Search context: the query, location, device, time, other ads and results on the page, and user signals.
- Expected impact of assets: how sitelinks, call assets and similar formats are likely to perform.
Your actual CPC is the least you need to keep your position: enough to clear the threshold and beat the Ad Rank of the advertiser below you. If nobody is below you, you pay a reserve price. That is why better quality lowers cost. Google says plainly that higher-quality ads can often lead to lower CPCs.
One exception to "you never pay more than your max bid": automated bidding and bid adjustments can push a single click above it. With Smart Bidding there is no fixed max CPC. The strategy manages cost against your CPA or ROAS target instead.
What drives CPC up for clinics
- Commercial intent: "hair transplant cost Dubai" or "emergency dentist open now" attract more bidders than informational searches like "what causes hair loss".
- Treatment value: a clinic can afford more per click for a high-ticket procedure than for a consultation. Competitors know this too, so these terms cost more.
- Location density: many clinics bidding in the same areas, such as Dubai Healthcare City, Jumeirah or Al Barsha, raise prices.
- Top-of-page placement: Google's thresholds and actual CPCs are usually higher for ads above the organic results.
- Weak quality signals: a generic ad or a slow homepage landing page lowers Ad Rank, so you pay more to hold the same position. See our Quality Score guide.
- Time and device: evening mobile searches for urgent care behave differently from weekday desktop research.
Healthcare CPC benchmarks (US data, use with care)
The figures below are third-party benchmarks, mostly from US campaigns and in US dollars. They show relative cost between specialties. They are not UAE prices.
| Category | Avg. CPC (LocaliQ 2026) | Avg. cost per lead (LocaliQ 2026) | Avg. CPC (WordStream 2025) | Avg. cost per lead (WordStream 2025) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dentists & dental services | $8.00 | $72.97 | $7.85 | $83.93 |
| Physicians & surgeons | $4.76 | $40.04 | $5.00 | $56.83 |
| Beauty & personal care | $4.62 | $39.25 | $5.70 | $60.34 |
| All industries | $5.42 | $66.69 | $5.26 | $70.11 |
About the data: LocaliQ's 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks (updated June 2026) draws on thousands of its customers' Google Ads and Microsoft Ads campaigns. WordStream's 2025 Google Ads Benchmarks uses 16,446 US search campaigns from April 2024 to March 2025, reported as medians. Neither source has a single "health & medical" category.
How to estimate CPC for your clinic in the UAE
- In Google Ads, open Tools > Planning > Keyword Planner, then choose Get search volume and forecasts.
- Paste 10–30 keywords you would really bid on, in both English and Arabic. Examples: "physiotherapy dubai", "dentist al barsha", "طبيب أسنان دبي".
- Set the location to the area you serve, such as Dubai or a radius around your clinic, not the whole UAE.
- Read the top of page bid (low range) and (high range) columns. The real CPC usually falls somewhere in or near that range.
- Use the forecast tab to see expected clicks and cost at different budgets.
- After 2–4 weeks of live traffic, replace the estimates with your own Avg. CPC and Cost / conv. columns.
Illustrative budget maths (hypothetical numbers): say your keywords cost about AED 12 a click, your landing page converts 8% of clicks into enquiries, and 40% of enquiries book. Then each booking costs roughly 12 ÷ 0.08 ÷ 0.4 = AED 375. Compare that with what a new patient is worth to you before you worry about CPC alone.
How to lower your cost per click
- Match ads to search themes. Put "teeth whitening" keywords in their own ad group, with an ad and landing page about teeth whitening. Ad relevance is one of the three quality components.
- Send clicks to a specific page. The page should show the treatment, location, price guidance if you publish it, and a fast way to book. It also needs to load quickly on mobile.
- Use all relevant assets. Sitelinks, callouts, call and location assets are part of Ad Rank.
- Add negative keywords. Exclude "jobs", "salary", "course", "free" and "DHA exam" if they don't fit, so you stop paying for irrelevant clicks.
- Tighten geography. Target the radius patients will actually travel, and use "presence" location settings for in-person services.
- Don't chase position one. The top spot costs most. Position two or three often brings bookings at a lower CPC.
- Check network settings. Search partners and Display can change average CPC and lead quality. Google's new channel prioritisation controls let you cap them.
- Optimise for cost per booking, not CPC. A AED 20 click that books is better than a AED 5 click that never does. Fix conversion tracking first.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Google Ads cost per month for a clinic?
There is no minimum. You set an average daily budget, and Google keeps monthly charges within 30.4 times that amount. The right budget depends on your keyword CPCs, conversion rate and the value of a new patient.
Do I pay my maximum bid on every click?
Usually not. You pay the minimum needed to clear quality thresholds and beat the ad below you, which is often less than your max. Automated bidding and bid adjustments can sometimes push a click above it.
What is a good CPC for healthcare?
There is no universal good number. US benchmarks put dentists around $8 and physicians and surgeons around $5 per click. In the UAE, judge CPC against your cost per booking and patient value, using Keyword Planner and your own data.
Why is my CPC higher than my competitor's?
Ad Rank combines bid, ad and landing page quality, thresholds, search context and expected asset impact. Better relevance and landing page experience can win the same position at a lower price.
When does Google charge my card?
With automatic payments, Google charges when your costs reach your payment threshold, and on the first day of each month. You can see your threshold on the Billing Summary page.
