Google Ads Keyword Match Types in 2026: Broad, Phrase and Exact
Broad, phrase and exact match in 2026: how each works, broad match with Smart Bidding, the AI Max upgrade, keyword priority rules and clinic examples.
Google Ads has three keyword match types. Exact match [keyword] shows your ad on searches with the same meaning as the keyword. Phrase match "keyword" adds searches that include its meaning, with extra words. Broad match reaches related searches, and Google recommends pairing it with Smart Bidding. Since September 2026, Search campaigns using the broad match campaign setting have been moving to AI Max, which goes further than broad match. So clinics need strong negative keywords and real booking data before they go broad.

The three match types in 2026
| Match type | Syntax | Matches | Control vs reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact | [dentist dubai marina] | Searches with the same meaning or intent | Most control, least reach |
| Phrase | "dentist dubai marina" | Searches that include the meaning, often with extra words | Middle |
| Broad | dentist dubai marina | Related searches, using signals beyond the words | Most reach, least control |
None of the three are literal any more. Google's keyword matching page describes exact match in terms of meaning, not identical words. Broader match types include everything the narrower ones match. So you don't need the same keyword in all three types in one ad group.
What each match type looks like for a clinic
These examples show the kind of searches each type can reach. They are illustrations. Google decides each match at auction time, and the search terms report shows what really happened.
Exact match: [teeth whitening dubai]
- Can match: "teeth whitening dubai", "dubai teeth whitening", "teeth whitening in dubai".
- Won't match: "teeth whitening price dubai marina" or "veneers dubai".
Phrase match: "teeth whitening"
- Can match: "teeth whitening price dubai", "best teeth whitening clinic near me", "laser teeth whitening jumeirah".
- Can also match: "teeth whitening course" and "teeth whitening kit". This is why negatives matter.
Broad match: teeth whitening
- Can match: everything above, plus related searches like "how to whiten yellow teeth" or "smile makeover cost".
- Google says broad match may also use your landing page, other keywords in the ad group and the searcher's recent searches to judge relevance.
Broad match and Smart Bidding
Google calls Smart Bidding critical for broad match. Each broad search is different, so the bid needs to reflect auction-time signals such as location, device and time. Google recommends Smart Bidding for every match type, and says it works best with broad.
The catch for clinics: Smart Bidding optimises toward whatever you call a conversion. If a job seeker's contact form counts the same as a patient booking, broad match plus Smart Bidding will happily find more job seekers. Before going broad, make sure:
- Conversions are real bookings, calls of a set length or qualified WhatsApp chats. See our conversion tracking guide.
- You have shared negative lists for jobs, courses, DIY and symptoms. See our negative keywords guide.
- The campaign gets enough conversions for the bid strategy. Our Smart Bidding guide explains the thresholds.
- The budget isn't capped every day. Broad match and AI Max need room to explore.
How AI Max changes match types
AI Max for Search is not a new campaign type. It is a layer you switch on inside a Search campaign. It has three features:
- Search term matching. Uses broad match plus "keywordless" matching based on your ads and landing pages. It can reach searches none of your keywords would.
- Text customisation. Writes headlines and descriptions from your ads, site and assets.
- Final URL expansion. Sends people to the page on your site that Google judges most relevant.
Key dates and rules:
- Google said in April 2026 that AI Max had left beta.
- From September 2026, Search campaigns using the broad match campaign setting are being upgraded automatically to AI Max, with search term matching on. Campaigns using automatically created assets are upgraded with search term matching and text customisation on.
- Dynamic Search Ads move to AI Max later. Google pushed that start to February 2027.
- Negative keywords are still respected with AI Max on.
- Search term matching doesn't work with Manual CPC. AI Max also flags campaigns that are limited by budget.
- In the search terms report, extra searches found by AI Max show with the match type "AI Max". A source column tells you whether broad match or keywordless matching found them.
One prioritisation detail matters. With the old broad match setting, Google treated each broad keyword as if an exact version existed too. After the move to AI Max, that stops. If you relied on it, add exact match copies of your key terms.
AI Max controls clinics should use
- Brand exclusions and inclusions to keep the campaign off other brands, or only on your own.
- Locations of interest at ad group level, so "dermatologist" traffic stays tied to Dubai or Abu Dhabi intent.
- URL exclusions to stop final URL expansion sending people to careers, blog or policy pages.
- Turning off text customisation if you can't review generated copy against DHA rules. Note that pinned headlines are ignored when text customisation and final URL expansion are both on.
Which match type wins when keywords overlap
Google's prioritisation order:
- An exact keyword identical to the search wins over phrase, broad and Performance Max.
- Phrase and broad keywords share priority with identical Performance Max search themes.
- When a search could match several ad groups, Google picks the most relevant.
- When priority is tied, higher Ad Rank wins.
So keep exact match versions of your most valuable searches, such as your clinic name and core service plus area. That way you control the ad and landing page for the searches that matter most.
A sensible match type setup for clinics
| Situation | Suggested approach |
|---|---|
| New clinic, small budget, little conversion data | Exact and phrase on core services plus area. Maximize conversions or Maximize clicks while data builds. Tight negatives. |
| Established clinic, 30+ real conversions a month in a campaign | Test broad match or AI Max in an experiment against your current setup. Keep exact copies of top terms. |
| Brand campaign | Exact and phrase on your clinic and doctor names. Keep it separate from generic campaigns. |
| High-value services such as implants, IVF or orthopaedics | Separate campaign so its budget and target CPA don't mix with check-ups. Broad only once offline bookings feed back. |
| Home healthcare | Phrase and exact first. Broad match on "nurse" or "caregiver" draws heavy job-seeker traffic in the UAE. |
Use Google's 1-click AI Max experiment, a 50/50 split, rather than flipping the whole account. Judge the result on cost per booked patient, not cost per click. If costs climb, our guide on why Google Ads gets expensive covers the usual causes.
Common match type mistakes
- Running broad match with Manual CPC. Google built broad for Smart Bidding.
- Going broad before conversion tracking separates patients from job seekers.
- Adding the same keyword in all three match types in one ad group. Broad already covers phrase and exact.
- Assuming exact match means identical words. It means same meaning.
- Not reading the search terms report after an AI Max upgrade.
Frequently asked questions
Is broad match good for clinics?
It can be, once Smart Bidding is optimising toward real bookings and you have strong negative lists. Without those, broad match tends to bring job seekers, students and symptom researchers.
What happened to broad match modifier?
Google folded broad match modifier into phrase match in 2021. Phrase match now covers what the modifier used to do.
Does exact match still mean exact?
No. Exact match shows ads on searches with the same meaning or intent, including reordered words, plurals and close variants.
Was my campaign moved to AI Max automatically?
If it used the campaign-level broad match setting or automatically created assets, Google began upgrading it from September 2026. Check the campaign settings and the search terms report for the "AI Max" match type.
Do I still need negative keywords with AI Max?
Yes. Google says negative keywords are still respected with AI Max on, and they are your main control over the extra searches it finds.
