Why is Google Ads so expensive for my clinic?
Why clinic Google Ads cost so much: high patient value, crowded Dubai auctions, Ad Rank and default settings that leak spend, and the fixes that cut cost.
Google Ads is expensive for clinics because healthcare clicks are high-value, many Dubai clinics bid on the same few keywords, and default settings spend money on searches and places you never chose. Benchmarks put the average click at $8.00 for dentists and $4.76 for physicians (LocaliQ 2026, mostly US data). The fix is rarely a smaller budget. It is tighter keywords, better Quality Score, Search-only settings and tracking booked patients, so you pay for fewer, better clicks.

Why clinic clicks cost so much
- A patient is worth a lot. One implant, IVF cycle or long home-nursing contract can be worth thousands of dirhams. Competitors know this and bid accordingly. Prices follow value.
- Dense local competition. Dubai has many clinics within a few kilometres of each other, all bidding on "dentist near me" or "dermatologist Dubai". Each search runs an auction, and more bidders push the price up.
- Ad Rank is not only your bid. Google ranks ads using your bid, ad and landing page quality, thresholds, search context and the expected impact of your assets (Google's Ad Rank page). A weak ad or slow page means you pay more for the same spot. See Quality Score.
- Fewer tools for healthcare. Google blocks remarketing and Customer Match for health ads under its personalised advertising policy, and restricts prescription drug terms outside the US, Canada and New Zealand. Every clinic competes on the same keywords instead.
Why your account costs more than it should
These are the leaks we see most often in clinic accounts. Check each one.
- Broad match on everything. Broad match is Google's default match type and can show your ad for related searches that do not share your keyword's meaning. Without strong conversion data, "dental implants" can match "dental implant course". Fix: start with exact and phrase match.
- No negative keywords. Open Search terms and look for jobs, salary, DHA exam, course, free, symptoms, other cities. Add them as negatives. Check weekly for the first month.
- Search partners and Display left on. Google includes Search partners by default. Untick it and Display at launch, then test later with data.
- "Presence or interest" location setting. This is the default. It includes people outside Dubai who show interest in Dubai. A local clinic usually wants "Presence" only.
- Ads running when nobody answers. Calls at 1am go to voicemail and the patient calls the next clinic. Schedule call-focused ads to reception hours.
- Home page as the landing page. A searcher looking for "Invisalign cost" lands on a generic home page and leaves. That lowers conversion rate and Quality Score. One page per treatment.
- Counting the wrong conversions. If page views or button clicks count as conversions, Smart Bidding buys more cheap junk. Count calls over 60 seconds, forms, WhatsApp and booked appointments. See conversion tracking.
- Budget spread too thin. Ten treatments on AED 3,000 a month means none gets enough clicks to learn. Pick the 2 or 3 most profitable.
Know how the budget actually works
- Google can spend up to 2 times your average daily budget on a busy day. Over a month it stays within 30.4 times the daily budget (Google's budget page). AED 100 a day means up to about AED 3,040 a month.
- You usually pay less than your maximum bid: roughly what is needed to beat the ad below you. Details in Google Ads cost per click.
- Agency fees sit on top. If you spend AED 10,000 on ads and pay AED 4,000 in fees, your real cost per click is 40% higher than Google shows.
Judge cost per patient, not cost per click
A high CPC is only a problem if the patient costs more than they are worth. Do the maths:
- Cost per click: AED 25.
- Landing page converts 10% of clicks into enquiries: cost per enquiry AED 250.
- Front desk books 50% of enquiries: cost per booked patient AED 500.
- Average first-year value of a new patient: AED 3,000. That is 6 times return on ad spend.
Now improve one step. Raise the booking rate from 50% to 70% by answering every call and replying to WhatsApp within 5 minutes, and cost per patient drops to about AED 357 without touching Google Ads. Often the cheapest fix is at the front desk. These figures are a worked example, not a quote. Use your own CPC from Keyword Planner and your own booking data.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal cost per click for a clinic in Dubai?
Google publishes no official UAE averages. US benchmarks put dentists at $8.00 and physicians at $4.76 per click. Use Keyword Planner for your treatments and area, then judge by cost per booked patient.
Will lowering my budget lower my cost per click?
Not directly. CPC is set by the auction and your Ad Rank. A smaller budget just buys fewer clicks. Better relevance and tighter targeting lower CPC.
Why did my costs jump this month?
Common causes: a new competitor, a bid strategy change, broad match picking up new searches, a seasonal peak, or a landing page problem lowering quality. Check Change history and Auction insights first.
Is Google Ads worth it for a small clinic?
Usually, if you focus on a few high-intent treatments, track booked patients, and answer every call. If budget is very tight, start with your Business Profile. See Google Ads or SEO first.
