How long does Google Ads take to work?
Google Ads can show within a day, but results take 30+ days. Ad review times, the learning period, conversion delay and a week-by-week plan for clinics.
Google Ads starts working almost immediately: Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day, and approved ads can get clicks and calls the same day. Judging whether it works takes longer. Google's Smart Bidding learning period usually lasts 1–2 conversion cycles, and Google recommends evaluating Target CPA results over 30 days with at least 30 conversions. For most clinics, expect first enquiries in week one, a usable picture after 30 days, and a properly optimised account after about three months.

A realistic timeline for a clinic campaign
The day counts below are a typical plan, not Google rules. The Google figures are linked.
| When | What happens | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0–1 | Ads go through policy review. Most are reviewed within one business day. Ads that need a more complex check take longer. | Check status after 2 business days. Contact support if review runs past a week. |
| Week 1 | First clicks, calls and WhatsApp messages. Data is thin and noisy. | Test every conversion action yourself. Read the search terms report daily. |
| Weeks 2–4 | Bid strategy is in "Learning". Cost per lead swings a lot. | Add negative keywords. Avoid big changes to bids, budgets or targets. |
| Day 30–45 | Enough data for a first fair verdict if you hit around 30 conversions. | Compare cost per booking with patient value. Cut weak keywords and areas. |
| Months 2–3 | Bidding has data. Landing page and ad tests show winners. | Move to Target CPA if volume allows. Shift budget to best treatments. |
Why results take weeks, not days
1. The learning period
Automated bid strategies show "Learning" after you create them, change their settings, or add or remove campaigns or keywords. Google says calibration typically takes 1–2 conversion cycles. A conversion cycle is the time from click to conversion. Manual CPC has no learning period. More in our Smart Bidding guide.
2. Conversion delay
Conversions are credited back to the day of the click. Google notes that recent days can look worse than they really are, because some clicks have not converted yet, while spend is already counted in full. Conversions can be reported up to 90 days after the click, depending on your conversion window.
A Google account executive made the same point in 2025, as reported by PPC Land: only about 30% of the conversion impact of a budget increase may show by day 3.
3. Your patients' decision time
Someone with toothache books today. Someone comparing hair transplant or IVF clinics may take weeks. Longer decisions mean longer learning and later conversions.
4. Data volume
Google recommends judging Target CPA over 30 days including at least 30 conversions. A small budget that brings 8 conversions a month will take much longer to give a reliable answer.
How to see your own conversion delay
- Open Campaigns in Google Ads.
- Set a date range that ended at least 30 days ago, so conversions have had time to come in.
- Click the segment icon and choose Conversions > Days to conversion.
- Note how many days it takes for most of your conversions to arrive. That is your conversion cycle. Wait at least that long after any change before judging it.
What slows clinics down
- Broken tracking. If bookings, calls or WhatsApp clicks are not recorded, bidding learns from the wrong signals. Fix conversion tracking before launch.
- Constant changes. Each change to bid strategy settings or keywords can restart learning. Batch changes weekly.
- Ad disapprovals. Prescription drug names and certain health claims get ads limited or rejected. Editing an ad sends it back for review.
- Budget too thin. Splitting a small budget across many treatments gives each campaign too little data. See how much a clinic should spend.
- Low Quality Score. Weak ad relevance and landing pages mean fewer impressions for the same spend. See our Quality Score guide.

Frequently asked questions
Should I stop Google Ads if I get no leads in the first week?
Not on that basis alone. First check that tracking works, ads are approved and search terms are relevant. Then judge after about 30 days, unless clicks are clearly from the wrong searches.
Does pausing a campaign reset the learning?
Google lists reactivating a bid strategy as a trigger for a new learning period, and frequent stops and starts break the data bidding relies on. Lower the budget instead if you need to slow spend.
How long does Google Ads take to work compared with SEO?
Ads can bring enquiries within days. SEO usually takes months to rank for competitive clinic searches. Many clinics use ads while SEO builds. See dental SEO.
When can I switch to Target CPA?
You can start Target CPA with no history if tracking is set up. Google recommends evaluating it over 30 days with at least 30 conversions. Read is Google Ads worth it for a clinic? before scaling.
