Why are my Google Ads leads bad quality?
Google Ads leads bad quality or spam? Stop rewarding the wrong conversion, cut junk traffic, add form friction and import booked patients back into Google.
Google Ads delivers the leads you reward. If you count every form, call tap or WhatsApp click as a conversion, Google finds the cheapest people who will do that, including job seekers, price shoppers and bots. Fix it by cutting low-intent traffic (Display, Search Partners, broad match, wrong locations), adding qualifying friction to forms, blocking spam, and telling Google which leads became patients through offline conversion import.

What "bad leads" look like in a clinic
- Fake names and numbers, or forms filled in seconds apart
- People asking for jobs, internships or DHA exam help
- Patients wanting a service you don't offer, or calling from another emirate
- "Just checking price" enquiries that never book
- Insurance you don't accept
- WhatsApp taps that never become a message
Count them. Take the last 50 Google leads and mark each one: booked, real but didn't book, wrong fit or spam. That split tells you which fix below matters most.
The fix, step by step
1. Stop rewarding the wrong action
Go to Goals > Summary. Check which actions are primary, the ones Smart Bidding chases.
- Primary: completed bookings, submitted forms, and calls if you can measure them.
- Secondary: page views, button taps, WhatsApp clicks, "directions" clicks.
- Set lead actions to count "One" per click, so three forms from one person count once.
If a WhatsApp tap counts the same as a booked implant consultation, Google will happily buy you WhatsApp taps.
2. Feed back which leads became patients
This is the fix that changes everything. Capture the Google click ID (GCLID) in a hidden form field and keep it with the lead in your clinic system. Then import "attended" or "treatment started" as a conversion. Since 15 June 2026, offline uploads go through Google Ads Data Manager or the Data Manager API, so make sure your CRM connector is updated. Once you have steady volume, make the imported action your primary goal.
Healthcare warning: Google's customer data policies treat health information as sensitive and restrict using it in enhanced conversions. A GCLID-only import doesn't upload patient names, phones or emails. Never send diagnoses or treatment details. Details are in our conversion tracking guide.
3. Cut low-intent traffic
- Search terms. Review weekly under Insights and reports > Search terms. Add negatives for jobs, salary, course, training, free, cheap, DIY, symptoms and areas you don't serve.
- Match types. Use phrase and exact match until offline data is flowing. Broad match plus a weak conversion goal is the classic recipe for junk leads.
- Networks. Turn off Display and Search Partners on Search campaigns. WordStream's lead quality guide names both as common junk sources.
- Location. Use "Presence" targeting and a realistic radius. A Jumeirah dental clinic rarely books patients from Al Ain.
- Auto-applied recommendations. Turn off "Add broad match keywords", "Expand reach with Google search partners" and "Use Display expansion" in auto-apply settings.
4. Make the ad filter people out
Good ads repel the wrong person. Use specifics:
- Price ranges where you can state them accurately: "Implant consultation with 3D scan".
- Insurers accepted, or "self-pay" if you don't take insurance.
- The area: "Dubai Marina clinic", "home nursing across Dubai".
- Who it's for: "Adults 18+", "women-only salon".
Keep within DHA wording rules. No "best", "guaranteed" or "100%". Prescription drug brand names can't be promoted in UAE ads under Google's Healthcare and medicines policy. Write "anti-wrinkle consultation", not a brand.
5. Add a little friction to the form
- Add one or two qualifying questions: treatment of interest, preferred clinic branch, insurance provider or self-pay.
- Validate UAE mobile numbers so "123456" can't be submitted.
- Add reCAPTCHA or a hidden honeypot field to stop bots.
- Don't ask for medical history. It hurts conversion and creates privacy risk.
- Using Google's lead form asset? Switch it from "More volume" to "More qualified". Google says this adds steps and produces fewer leads with greater interest.
6. Watch Performance Max
Performance Max runs across Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail and Maps. With a soft conversion goal it can fill your inbox with low-intent form fills. If you use it, give it only real lead or offline conversion goals. Then check channel reporting, and compare its lead-to-patient rate with Search. Health ads also can't use remarketing or Customer Match lists, so PMax has fewer quality signals in healthcare. See Google Ads for dentists and clinics.
7. Fix the follow-up
Some "bad leads" were good leads called back two days late. Respond within minutes in working hours. Use a WhatsApp template. Log each lead's outcome so step 2 has data to feed back.

Frequently asked questions
Why am I getting spam leads from Google Ads?
Usually bots on Display or Search Partners placements, or forms with no protection. Turn those networks off on Search campaigns, add reCAPTCHA or a honeypot, and don't count unverified form fills as primary conversions.
Will fewer leads mean fewer patients?
Usually not. Removing junk lowers lead volume but often keeps booked patients steady, so your cost per patient falls. Judge on booked patients, not form fills.
Is Maximise Conversions causing bad leads?
It buys whatever you call a conversion. With a weak goal it finds cheap, low-intent leads. With a booked-patient goal from offline import it does the opposite. See Smart Bidding explained.
How many offline conversions do I need?
Google doesn't publish a fixed minimum for imports. The more steady monthly volume, the better Smart Bidding learns. Smaller clinics often import "booked" rather than "attended" to get enough data.
