How do I lower my cost per lead on Google Ads?
A 10-step checklist to lower Google Ads cost per lead for clinics: tracking, negative keywords, location settings, landing pages, assets and bidding.
Cost per lead is your cost per click divided by your conversion rate, so you lower it by cutting wasted clicks and turning more of the remaining clicks into enquiries. In order: fix conversion tracking, block irrelevant searches with negative keywords, target only the areas patients travel from, send each treatment to its own fast landing page, and only then tune bidding. Measure cost per booked patient as well, because a cheap lead that never books is not a saving.

First, know which lever you are pulling
Cost per lead = CPC ÷ conversion rate. At AED 12 a click and a 6% conversion rate, each lead costs AED 200. Lift conversion to 10% and the same clicks give AED 120 leads. Cut CPC to AED 9 as well and you reach AED 90. Conversion rate is usually the bigger lever for clinics. For context, LocaliQ's 2026 US benchmarks put average conversion rates at 10.67% for dentists and 12.43% for physicians and surgeons, with average cost per lead of $72.97 and $40.04.
The 10-step checklist
- Fix what you count as a lead. If page views or "click to call" button taps with no call count as conversions, your cost per lead looks fine but means nothing. Count real calls over a set length, submitted forms, WhatsApp chats and, ideally, booked appointments. See conversion tracking for clinics.
- Read the search terms report every week. The search terms report shows the actual searches that triggered your ads. In clinic accounts the usual leaks are jobs, courses, salaries, "free", DIY and competitor brand searches.
- Add negative keywords properly. Google says negative keywords do not match close variants or synonyms. Add "job" and "jobs", "course" and "courses", and Arabic equivalents separately. Build a shared list such as: job, jobs, vacancy, salary, course, training, DHA exam, licence, license, free, how to, home remedy.
- Tighten location targeting. Google's default "Presence or interest" setting also reaches people who are only interested in your area. For an in-person clinic, switch to Presence and target the radius patients really travel. A Jumeirah dental clinic rarely needs clicks from Sharjah.
- Split ad groups by treatment. Teeth whitening, implants and braces each need their own keywords and ads. Closer relevance helps Quality Score, and Google says higher-quality ads can often get lower CPCs.
- Give each treatment its own landing page. Match the headline to the search. Show the doctor, the location, insurance accepted, a price range if you publish one, and one-tap call and WhatsApp buttons. Make it load fast on mobile. Sending all traffic to the homepage is the most common cause of high cost per lead.
- Use every relevant asset. Call, location, sitelink and callout assets make the ad larger and feed into Ad Rank. Keep wording within DHA rules: no "best", "100%" or "guaranteed".
- Schedule ads for when you can answer. Look at conversions by hour and day. Lower bids or pause when no one picks up the phone, unless WhatsApp is answered around the clock.
- Check where your ads show. Search partners and Display placements can bring cheaper clicks that convert worse. Compare cost per lead by network and cut what does not perform. Google's new channel prioritisation controls help here.
- Then tune bidding. Once tracking is clean and you have steady volume, set a Target CPA close to your current cost per lead and lower it in small steps. Google recommends judging Target CPA over 30 days with at least 30 conversions. Big target cuts can throttle volume.
Example: a dental clinic's cost per lead (illustrative)
| Stage | Avg. CPC | Conv. rate | Cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before: homepage, all UAE, no negatives | AED 14 | 5% | AED 280 |
| After negatives and Presence targeting | AED 13 | 7% | AED 186 |
| After treatment landing pages and assets | AED 11 | 10% | AED 110 |
These are made-up numbers to show how the levers stack. Your results depend on your market, offer and response speed.
Do not lower cost per lead the wrong way
- Counting junk as leads. Loose conversion settings make the number fall while bookings do not move.
- Bidding only on cheap, vague keywords. "Teeth" is cheaper than "dental implants Dubai", and far less likely to book.
- Cutting the budget to the bone. Too little data makes Smart Bidding unstable. See how much a clinic should spend.
- Judging changes too early. Recent days look worse because of conversion delay. Read how long Google Ads takes to work.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good cost per lead for a clinic in Dubai?
Google publishes no UAE figure. A good cost per lead is one that keeps your cost per booked patient well below what a patient is worth to you. US benchmarks put dental leads around $73 and physician leads around $40.
Why did my cost per lead suddenly go up?
Common causes: a new competitor, a broken tracking tag, a bid strategy back in learning after changes, new irrelevant search terms, or a landing page that stopped working. Check tracking and search terms first.
Should I use broad match keywords?
Broad match can work with Smart Bidding and clean conversion data. Without them it often brings irrelevant searches. Watch the search terms report closely if you use it.
Does replying faster lower my cost per lead?
It does not change cost per lead, but it lowers cost per booking. More of the leads you already paid for turn into patients.
Is lowering cost per lead always the goal?
No. Cost per booked patient matters more. See is Google Ads worth it for a clinic?
