To work as a lab technician or lab technologist in Dubai you need a DHA licence. A Medical Laboratory Technician needs a diploma of at least two years; a Medical Laboratory Technologist needs a BSc in Medical Laboratory Science or Technology. Neither title needs prior experience under the DHA qualification rules. Most applicants sit the DHA computer-based exam: 150 questions in 3 hours, USD 240, pass mark 50%. Salary surveys put most lab technicians at about AED 8,500 to 16,900 a month gross.

Technician or technologist: pick the right title
DHA licenses lab staff under set titles in its Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR). Applying under the wrong one is the most common reason for a failed eligibility check.

From the DHA computer-based testing guideline updated September 2026 (DHA CBT guideline). Exams run through Prometric test centres worldwide. The result shows as Pass or Fail in Sheryan; DHA does not share the score.
Exam coverage for technologists: blood bank, clinical chemistry, haematology, immunology and serology, urinalysis and body fluids, histology and cytology techniques, microbiology, lab operations, and patient safety and professionalism. The technician exam adds bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology and hormones, with safety and quality control.
Who skips the exam
Technologists with a valid licence and good standing certificate from listed systems can be exempt, if they qualified in the last three years or have no gap in practice. Exemption criteria are in section 21.17 of the PQR. The list includes the UK (HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist), Australia (AIMS), Canada (CSMLS), New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa (HPCSA as Technologist), the USA and several European countries. Non-English-speaking routes need proof of English (for example IELTS 5.0 or OET C).
How to get licensed: the order that saves time
- Self-assessment on Sheryan. Free, no documents needed. It tells you which title you are eligible for.
- Primary source verification. Your diploma or degree, experience letters and good standing certificate are verified by DHA's verification agency. See our DataFlow guide.
- Book and pass the exam, unless exempt. Three attempts allowed; a third failure blocks reapplication for two years.
- Registration. Valid for one year from issue.
- Job offer and licence activation. The lab or hospital activates your licence through its own Sheryan account.
- Keep it active. Allied health professionals need 10 CPD points a year to renew.

Lab technician salary in Dubai
There is no official salary scale for private labs. Paylab's UAE survey shows 80% of Medical Laboratory Technicians earning between about AED 8,486 and AED 16,891 a month gross (Paylab). Treat this as a guide only: survey samples are small and the figure mixes basic pay and allowances. When comparing offers, look at the basic salary separately, since end-of-service gratuity is calculated on basic pay, and check housing, shift allowances and annual flights.

Yes on paper: the PQR asks for no experience for Medical Laboratory Technologist or Technician, subject to the gap-of-practice rule. In practice many employers still prefer some experience.
