Why am I getting clicks but no leads from Google Ads?

Getting Google Ads clicks but no leads? Check tracking, search terms, Display and Search Partners, location settings and your landing page, in that order.

Guide · 18 Oct 2026 · Access One

Quick answer

Clicks without leads almost always come from one of four causes: conversion tracking that isn't recording, search terms that don't match what you sell, a landing page that makes booking hard on mobile, or traffic from Display, Search Partners or the wrong location. Check tracking first, then the search terms report, then the landing page. Most clinics find the leak within an hour.

How bad is "no leads"?

Set a baseline before you change anything. LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks give these average Search conversion rates (clicks that became leads):

Industry (benchmark)Avg conversion rateAvg cost per lead
Physicians and surgeons12.43%$40.04
Dentists and dental services10.67%$72.97
Beauty and personal care10.35%$39.25
All industries8.18%$66.69

These are mostly US accounts. Still, if 200 clicks to your dental clinic produced two enquiries (1%), the problem is real. It isn't bad luck.

The fix, in order

1. Prove tracking works

Many "no lead" accounts actually have leads. Google just can't see them.

  1. Compare Google's conversion count with what reception logged from Google for the same dates.
  2. Go to Goals > Summary. Any action marked "Inactive", "Unverified" or "Needs attention" is broken.
  3. Run a test: open your landing page in Tag Assistant, submit the form, tap WhatsApp, tap the phone number. Each should fire once.
  4. Check bookings that leave your site. A third-party booking widget on another domain loses the click unless cross-domain tracking is set up.

Full steps are in our conversion tracking guide. If reception is busy and Google shows nothing, fix this before touching anything else.

2. Read the search terms report

Go to Campaigns > Insights and reports > Search terms. Sort by cost. You'll often find clicks like these on a Dubai clinic account:

  • "dental assistant jobs dubai", "dermatologist salary uae", "DHA exam"
  • "free dental check up government", "home remedy for toothache"
  • "botox course", "laser hair removal machine price"
  • Clinic names in another emirate you don't serve

Tick them and use Add as negative keyword. Search-campaign negatives added this way default to exact match, so add broader versions such as "jobs" by hand. Then tighten the keywords themselves. Broad match on "dentist" pays for every dentistry question in the country.

3. Turn off traffic you didn't choose

  • Display Network on a Search campaign: off. It sends cheap, low-intent clicks.
  • Search Partners: off until Google Search itself is profitable.
  • Location option: switch from the default "Presence or interest" to "Presence", so you pay for people in or regularly in your area. Leave "interest" on only for a medical tourism campaign.
  • Ad schedule: if nobody answers after 10pm, don't run call-led ads after 10pm.
  • Auto-applied recommendations: check whether Google added broad match keywords or Search Partners for you. They can do both.

4. Fix the landing page

Open your ad on your own phone, on mobile data. Then check:

  1. Does the headline repeat what they searched? "Teeth whitening in Al Barsha", not "Welcome to our clinic".
  2. Are call, WhatsApp and Book buttons visible without scrolling?
  3. Does the page load in a few seconds? Heavy sliders and videos kill mobile conversions.
  4. Is the form short? Name, phone and preferred time. No medical history.
  5. Are trust signals there? Doctor names and licensed titles, insurers accepted, location, parking, hours.
  6. Is there a price or price range, with conditions? DHA rules require stated prices to be accurate.
  7. Does the WhatsApp button open the right number with a pre-filled message?

Send each treatment to its own page. Home-page traffic converts worse and lowers your Quality Score.

5. Check the offer matches the search

Someone searching "emergency dentist open now" at 9pm needs a phone answered. Someone searching "Invisalign cost Dubai" wants a price and a free consultation. If your ad promises one thing and the page offers another, they leave. Write one ad group per intent.

6. Check the phone side

A lot of "no leads" are missed calls. Pull your phone log for the hours your ads ran. Unanswered calls, voicemail and "we'll call you back" all lose patients who just clicked an ad. Google forwarding numbers aren't available in the UAE, so your own call log is the best evidence.

7. Only then look at bidding

If tracking is broken, Smart Bidding is optimising blind. Fix tracking, then let Smart Bidding learn. A new strategy needs typically one to two conversion cycles to calibrate.

Frequently asked questions

How many clicks should I get before expecting a lead?

At the 2026 benchmark conversion rates of 8 to 12%, roughly one lead per 8 to 12 clicks. If you have 100 clicks and no leads, stop and check tracking and search terms.

Are my clicks fake or bots?

Some may be, but Google filters invalid clicks and doesn't charge for them, crediting you later where possible. Wrong search terms and wrong locations waste far more money than bots.

Should I count WhatsApp clicks as leads?

Track them, but as a secondary conversion at first. A tap on WhatsApp isn't a message sent. Compare taps with real chats for a few weeks before you bid on them.

Why does Google show conversions but my clinic has no new patients?

You're probably counting the wrong action, such as page views, or double-counting forms. See why Google Ads leads are bad quality.
