Why did my Google Ads suddenly stop getting leads?
Google Ads leads suddenly stopped? Check billing and policy alerts, conversion tracking, Change history, your forms and phones, and Auction insights.
When leads stop suddenly, something changed: a declined payment, a disapproved ad, a broken form or tracking tag, a website update, a bid strategy or budget edit, or a new competitor. Check in this order: billing and policy notices, then conversion tracking status, then Change history, then your website and phone line, then Auction insights. A sudden drop is almost always one specific cause you can find in under an hour.

First, which number dropped?
Open Campaigns and compare the last 14 days with the 14 days before, using the date range's compare option. Look at four columns: impressions, clicks, conversions and cost.
| What dropped | Likely cause | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| Everything, to zero | Billing, verification, suspension or a paused campaign | Step 1 |
| Conversions only, clicks normal | Tracking broken, form or WhatsApp broken, landing page changed | Steps 2 and 4 |
| Impressions and clicks | Budget, bids, disapproved ads, competitors | Steps 3 and 5 |
| Gradual decline over weeks | Seasonality, competition, ad fatigue | Step 6 |
The fix, step by step
1. Check billing, policy and account notices
- Check the bell icon and the account's email inbox for policy and billing alerts.
- Declined payment. Ads can stop until it clears. Check the Billing summary, call your bank and add a backup payment method.
- Verification. A missed deadline pauses the account until you complete it.
- Disapprovals. Filter the Ads tab by status. A landing page edit that adds a prescription drug brand name can get healthcare ads disapproved under the Healthcare and medicines policy.
2. Check conversion tracking
If clicks are steady but conversions fell to zero overnight, suspect tracking before anything else.
- Go to Goals > Summary. Is any action now "Inactive" or "Needs attention"?
- Ask reception: did real enquiries also drop? If phones are busy but Google shows nothing, the tag broke. Leads didn't stop.
- Common breakers: a website redesign, a new cookie banner, a plugin update, a new booking widget, or a moved thank-you page.
- Test in Tag Assistant. Our conversion tracking guide has the steps.
- Once fixed, add a data exclusion for the broken dates. That stops Smart Bidding from learning that your ads suddenly stopped working and cutting bids.
3. Read Change history
Go to Campaigns > Change history. It covers the past two years and shows who changed what, next to performance. Look for:
- A budget cut, or a paused campaign or ad group
- A new bid strategy or a lower target CPA
- New negative keywords, especially shared lists
- Location, schedule or language edits
- Changes by "Google Ads system", which are often auto-applied recommendations such as broad match keywords or removed "redundant" keywords
Any bid strategy change starts a learning period of typically one to two conversion cycles. Undoing it restarts learning again, so reverse only clear mistakes.
4. Check the website and phones yourself
- Submit your own form on a phone. Does the confirmation arrive? Does the email reach someone who reads it?
- Tap WhatsApp. Is it the right number? Is the WhatsApp Business account still active?
- Call the number in your call asset during ad hours. Does someone answer?
- Is the SSL certificate valid? An expired certificate shows a security warning that drives visitors away.
- Did the page get slower after a redesign?
5. Check competition and budget
- Open Auction insights for the campaign. A new clinic with a big budget can push your impression share down overnight.
- Check for "Limited by budget". If CPCs rose, the same budget now buys fewer clicks.
- Look at keyword statuses for new "Rarely shown due to low Quality Score" or "Below first page bid estimate" flags.
6. Rule out seasonality, but don't hide behind it
UAE healthcare demand moves with the calendar. Elective treatments often slow in summer when many residents travel. Patterns shift during Ramadan and Eid, and dental and aesthetic demand often picks up before holidays and weddings. Compare with the same weeks last year if you have the data. A seasonal dip is gradual and shared across campaigns. A sudden drop in one campaign is not seasonal.
7. Use Google's own diagnostics
- Explanations: in time comparison mode, click "See Explanations" on the campaign table. Google lists likely reasons for changes in impressions, clicks and cost. It is currently a beta for manual CPC and eCPC Search campaigns only.
- Ad preview and diagnosis: confirms whether your ad can show for a real search right now. See why your ads aren't showing.

Frequently asked questions
Why did my Google Ads leads drop after a website update?
The update most likely removed or moved the conversion tag, changed the thank-you page, or broke the form. Test every lead path in Tag Assistant and fix the tag, then exclude the broken dates.
Can Google change my campaigns without asking?
Yes, if auto-applied recommendations are on. They can add broad match keywords, remove keywords or expand to Search Partners. Check the Recommendations history and Change history for "Google Ads system" entries.
Should I raise my budget when leads drop?
Not until you know why. If tracking or a form is broken, more budget buys more wasted clicks. Raise budget only when the status is "Limited by budget" and cost per lead is healthy.
How long does it take to recover?
Billing and disapproval fixes restore delivery once resolved. After tracking repairs or bid strategy changes, Smart Bidding usually needs one to two conversion cycles to settle.
