How do I fix my Google Ads when they're not working?

Google Ads not working? Find the failing stage, check billing, tracking, search terms, landing pages and budget, and fix it step by step. For UAE clinics.

Guide · 18 Oct 2026 · Access One

Quick answer

First find out where it breaks. No impressions means your ads aren't showing. Impressions but few clicks means weak ads or targeting. Clicks with no leads usually means broken tracking, wrong search terms or a weak landing page. Leads that don't book means you are optimising for the wrong conversion. Fix those stages in order, and change one thing at a time.

Step 1: find the stage that is failing

"Not working" means different things. Open Campaigns and set the date range to the last 30 days. Then match your numbers to this table.

It was fine, then droppedSomething changedWhy did my ads stop getting leads?

For reference, LocaliQ's 2026 search benchmarks put the all-industry average at a 6.64% CTR and an 8.18% conversion rate. Dentists averaged 5.66% CTR and 10.67% conversion. Physicians and surgeons averaged 6.61% and 12.43%. These are mostly US benchmarks, not targets. If you are at half of them, something is broken.

Step 2: check the account isn't blocked

  1. Billing. A declined card can stop your ads. Check the Billing summary and add a backup payment method.
  2. Verification. If Google asked you to verify and you missed the deadline, the account is paused until you finish. Review can take up to 5 business days.
  3. Policy. Look at the Status column on the Ads page. "Disapproved" ads don't run. "Eligible (limited)" is common for healthcare and means the ad runs with restrictions.

Step 3: confirm tracking is telling the truth

Most "Google Ads isn't working" complaints from clinics are tracking problems. Go to Goals > Summary and look at the tracking status of every conversion action.

  • Is each action recording? "Inactive" or "Unverified" means the tag isn't firing.
  • Is the primary goal a real lead (booking, form, call, WhatsApp)? Page views or "contact page visits" as primary goals will mislead Smart Bidding.
  • Do Google's numbers match your front desk? If reception logged 40 enquiries and Google shows 8, tracking is broken. If Google shows 80 and reception logged 15, you are counting junk.

The full setup is in our conversion tracking guide. Calls from ads are tricky in the UAE because Google forwarding numbers aren't available here.

Step 4: clean the traffic

  1. Open Insights and reports > Search terms. Read every term that cost money in the last 30 days.
  2. Add irrelevant terms as negative keywords. Typical clinic waste: "jobs", "salary", "course", "DHA exam", "free", "home remedy", competitor names you don't want.
  3. In campaign settings, turn off Display Network and Search Partners on Search campaigns until the core works.
  4. Under Locations, choose "Presence" so you reach people in or regularly in your area. The default, "Presence or interest", also reaches people only showing interest in it.
  5. Set an ad schedule that matches when your reception answers the phone.

Step 5: fix the ad and the page together

  • One treatment per ad group. "Dental implants Jumeirah" ads go to an implants page, not the home page.
  • Put the treatment and the area in the headline. Add call, location and sitelink assets.
  • On mobile, show phone, WhatsApp and a booking button without scrolling.
  • Show doctor names, DHA-licensed titles, insurance accepted, parking and hours.
  • Keep within DHA advertising rules. No "best", "100%" or "guaranteed".

Matching keyword, ad and page improves Quality Score, which lowers your cost per click.

Step 6: check bidding and budget

  • "Limited by budget" means your ads show less than they could. A campaign can spend up to twice its daily budget on a given day, but no more than 30.4 times it in a month.
  • Spread thin across ten treatments? Cut to your two or three most profitable and fund them properly.
  • Smart Bidding needs reliable conversion data. If tracking was broken, go back to manual or Maximise Clicks with a cap first. See Smart Bidding explained.
  • Changing a bid strategy triggers a learning period of typically one to two conversion cycles. Don't judge it in three days.

Step 7: change one thing, then wait

Write down what you changed and when. Change history keeps two years of edits, but notes help. Give each change at least two weeks before you judge it. Also check whether auto-applied recommendations are on. They can add broad match keywords or switch on Search Partners without you noticing.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I give Google Ads before deciding it doesn't work?

Give a new campaign four to eight weeks with working tracking. Smart Bidding usually needs one to two conversion cycles to calibrate after a change, so judge on a full month, not a few days.

Why am I spending money but getting nothing?

Usually one of three things: tracking isn't recording leads, the search terms report shows irrelevant searches, or the landing page doesn't make booking easy on mobile. Check them in that order.

Should I switch off Google Ads and try SEO instead?

They do different jobs. Ads bring patients this month. SEO builds over months. Most clinics need both. See our dental SEO guide and healthcare marketing playbook.

Is my Google Ads budget too low?

Work backwards. At the LocaliQ 2026 dental benchmark of $8 a click and a 10.67% conversion rate, 20 leads need about 190 clicks, or roughly $1,500 a month for one treatment. Dubai costs can be higher.

Can Google Ads be "broken" on Google's side?

Rarely. Reporting can lag by about three hours, and policy reviews can delay new ads. Almost every lasting problem is in settings, tracking or the landing page.
